Subterranean TermitesFlying termites (Swarmers or winged reproductives)
The weather is now humid and we will be experiencing termite colonisation flights over the next few months. These flying termites will end up in your house, on your cars, in your gardens - just take a look at your street lights and in the spider webs around your home.
To distinguish termites from ants there are a few things you can check. Termite swarmers (flying termites) have the same length wings - ants have a shorter pair at the rear, both ants and termites have four wings. Termites don't have a segmented abdomen like ants and have one long body. Termites have straight antennae and ants have bent antennae.
That termites eat 24 hours a day 7 day a week! This makes them very efficient at removing dead wood from forests but also makes them very destructive when they turn their attention to buildings, which they only see as another tree in the forest.
That subterranean termites are the most destructive type. They live in colonies of over 1 million individuals, and can destroy both hardwood and soft wood, cardboard, newspaper and anything which has a cellulose content.
